3. DESCRIPTION Directional control valves are components the function of which is to direct the circulating oil flow in the oil-hydraulic system to the use that has been chosen by shifting the operator. (Directional drawer valve). The function is obtained by shifting the spool (drawer) inside a cavity that has regular and serial openings. The resulting connections of above openings form the requested functional circuits. The displacement of the spool is obtained by means of ACTUATORS. They can be either DIRECT (manual) or INDIRECT (electric, pneumatic, hydraulic, cable, operated etc.). See catalogue part two. The control of the position can be ACTIVE (automatic return) or BLOCKED in different kinds of construction, BLB directional valves are predisposed to comply with all those essential and important functions that make oil hydraulic plants safe and efficient. They can be resumed like this: - Pressure setting and control (relief valve, antishock valve). - Regulation of the oil floe (integrated with 3-way compensated valves). - No return function or block of the use. - Filling up function (anticavitation). - To feed and use two circuits (or parts thereof) at the same time, but independently. - Possibility to build circuits in parallel, single, series and mixed. - Possibility to connect with other valves using only one source of energy. - Regulation of the energy by directly acting on the source. - Possibility to use more sources of energy. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION SEE CATALOGUE PART TWO 3.1 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CONSTRUCTION BLB directional valves are divided in two main groups: A) Monoblock valves, marked by the monogram BM/... B) Stackable valves, marked by the monogram BC/... 3.1.1 The BM/... directional control valves are characterized by having all the a.m. functions in one housing, also for more uses (max. 7). 3.1.2 The BC/... directional valves are characterized by having the functions in one housing, also for each use (element, work section). The elements can be assembled together in a quantity that is equivalent to the required uses (max. 10). The setup is more flexible and therefore can easily be suitable for complex requirements. 3.2 FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS All BLB models are planned in 6/3, 6/4 system. The drawer controls six ways in three or four positions indistinctly. Anyway it is possible to get circuits with drawers of type 6/2, 5/4, 5/3, 5/2, 4/3, 4/2 (see catalogue part two). The stock of the spool is obtained by negative covering, and in the systems 6/3, 5/3 and 4/3 takes place in 3 phases: 1- Tightness covering. 2- Progressive regulation. 3- Complete opening. |

4. TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS Mechanical characteristics are deeply explained in the second part of the catalogue. We hereby only report a summary and some additional points. 4.1 RECAPITULATION OF TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTIC - Nominal flow and limits. - Maximum flow and setting field of the main relief valve. - Connections and covering of the spool. - Pressure drop. - Threads of the parts for tube connections. - Various possibilities of spool actuation and control. - Circuits and normal connections. - Normal accessory applications. - Possible supplementary functions on work sections or general functions for the whole valve. - Size and weight. 4.2 INSTALLATION The position of the mounting is not relevant, follow indications in Chapter 6. 4.3 MATERIALS AND PROTECTIONS The characteristics of valves depend on the engineering cast iron (housing) and hardened steel (spool) being used. O-ring seals are made of synthetic rubber with oil resistant nitric mix, that is suitable to the mineral oil used in the oil-hydraulic circuits.Difference fluids and heavy duty conditions require fluoridated elastomer mix (Vyton). The exposed surface are protected against aggressive environments by a preservative treatment, whereas suitable materials are used for the elements holding the components of the actuators and controls. 4.4 SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS For technical characteristics that cannot be found in the catalogue, or that depend on customized applications, ASK THE TECHNICAL SERVICE of BLB srl or approved BLB distributor. |

5. CHOICE AND USE Choice and use of directional control valves must be determined this way: a) Duty characteristics required by the plant (pressure, flow, temperature, maintenance). b) Functional characteristics of the plant and of each single work section (main oil-hydraulic schematic, and particularly that of the valve). c) Interfacing with the other parts of the plant:
5.1 POINT a) Valves must be used referring to the duty limits as indicated in part 2) of the catalogue and under respect of the operating conditions as indicated in the schedule 5.4. For requirements exceeding these limits ask the manufacturing Company. 5.2 POINT b) For new plants or modification of already existing ones ASK OUR TECHNICIANS to determine the best plan for yours needs. Once the more suitable solution has been found and approved by the user, the schematic and sized drawing (if necessary) will be handed for installation. 5.3 POINT c) 5.3.1 - LOCATION AND INSTALLATION 5.3.1.1 - LOCATION It is recommended to predispose the area where the valve will be placed, in order to ease the mounting, the pipe connection, the setting for start and testing (i.e. valves setting, read-out of the connected instruments etc.). 5.3.1.2 - INSTALLATION 1 - The valves must be fastened with screws in the support zone holes. The mounting position is not that important, while the elements forming the support must create a flat surface. This is necessary in order to avoid that the testing causes any dangerous deformation that could compromise the functioning. 2 - If it not possible to have an adequate support, use supplementary clamps or elastic elements to eliminate the geometric defects. 3 - Install the valve in a shock and vibration proof zone. 4 - Protect from oxidation with a rust-proof coating o painting. Solvents for the preparing of surfaces shall not corrode mobile parts. 5.3.2 - CONNECTING OF PIPES - Remove protecting plugs from the parts of the valve only when connecting the pipes. - Always use pipes and fittings that are suitable for the setting pressure and for the maximum flow of application (see schedule 5.4). - Never use tapered fittings. - Never use tape winded on threads to get tightness. 5.3.3 - ACTUATING/CONTROLS Any supplementary part used to get customized actuation or spool control during the function should allow the following: - To perform the whole stroke of work. - Not to transmit such actions as to compromise the duration and the functionality of the original parts. Please note: The user, before he makes any customized application, must ask BLB to get its approval and, if that is the case, the preparation of the valve . 5.4 USE 5.4.1 - SUMMARIZING LIST OF THE OPERATING CONDITIONS
For the fluids and particular environmental conditions ask technical service of BLB srl. 5.4.2 - MONOBLOCK/STACKABLE Use the monoblock valves when following features are required: - Strong construction for plants with frequent ram shocks. - Reduced size and weight. - Possibility to mount only one no return valve (only a work section at time being used). - No need of auxiliary valves on work sections. - Simple and standardized circuits. - Higher reliability and less maintenance (no tie rods and interface O-ring seals). - Economy of the plant. - Not very flexible circuit composition. In different conditions use stackable valves, particularly when: - Flexible and easily modifiable composition of the circuit are required. - Possibility of no return valve on every work section (contemporary use of more work sections). - Assembling possibility by the user or the authorized third party. - Every time auxiliary valves are needed for every section. 5.4.3 - NOT ALLOWED UTILIZATIONS - Never use directional control valves to hold actuators in fixed position for periods of time that are not compatible with the work pressure (because the inevitable internal leaking). - For any use that does not come into the operating duty or functional conditions of this catalogue, ask BLB TECHNICAL SERVICE. In case of an admitted use, always require a written answer and supplementary specifications suitable for the product. - Never use directional control valves in systems having no filters. The admitted contamination level is reached by using filters with elements with 30m medium pores. - Never use directional control valves for fluids other than those reported in the enclosed chart. |

6. CONDITION OF USE Observe following indications: 6.1 INSTALLING OPERATIONS - When moving the valves avoid collisions and shocks. - Remove the protection plugs only to connect fittings and pipes. - Screws, fittings and pipes must be tightened by means of proper torque and adequate keys, better with torque control (dynamo-metric keys). Please note: a) Never use fuctitious extensions and never push on torque. An extreme tightening might cause deformations of the valve and compromise its regular performance. b) Do not invert the connection between inlet and tank line. 6.2 STARTING - Before starting, a good rule is to "wash the plant" with oil fluxing from an auxiliary plant. - Make the starting with actuators not under load, slowly operate till the plant is filled up. - Calibrate the valves and make a complete testing of the plant. - If the initial fluxing has not been made, at the end of the test, clean the filter. - Never make the valve setting without previously mounting a manometer on line. |

7. MAINTENANCE 7.1 NORMAL MAINTENANCE - Periodically, lubrificate the mobile parts located in the manual actuators and in the controls. - Periodically, check the functioning of the relief valve. - Periodically, clean the filter of the plant. Excess of contamination of oil causes misfuntions of the spool and of the spool and the relief valve. 7.2 PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE - At every change of oil in the plant, replace filter and seals. - Check the setting of the relief valve, and replace it when it is not reliable anymore. - In stackable valves, check the tightening of tie rods by using a dinamometric key. 7.3 EXTRAORDINARY MAINTENANCE In case of intervention for which to disassemble the valve is necessary, ask an authorized technician or directly ask BLB srl, itself. |

8. DEFECTIVITY AND DEMOLITION 8.1 DEFECTS Valves are delivered after they have been tested according to the performances declared in this catalogue. The defects that may be found when first installing the valves usually depend either on the non respect of indication of chapter 5 or on the damages that occurred during the transportation. During the period of work, the following may be found: a) STICKING THE SPOOL
b) OIL LEAKING BETWEEN ELEMENTS OR IN CORRESPONDENCE OF SPOOL
c) EXCESS OF INTERNAL LEAKAGE
8.2 SPARE PARTS Replace the pieces to be changed only with original spare parts. For correct intervention respect the pertaining technical specifications (charts, sets, schedules...) available from the manufacturer. 8.3 DEMOLITION No longer utilizable valves must be disassembled to separate metallic parts from synthetic material or rubber. Do not waste the single elements or the oil remaining therein. |
